Merike Luqus
Merike Lugus divides her time between painting and writing, and allows herself to be distracted by friends, family, animals, and her large garden.
Her paintings are mostly figurative, as people allow her to express her feelings about what she sees around her. Her interest in the human form and face led her naturally into portraiture.
Her vision of portraiture combines old glazing techniques, which give depth and luminosity, with contemporary edginess and colours. It's a slow process, requiring drying between the many layers of applications. Her main focus is on the subtleties of facial expression and the use of colour to bring out the richness and complexity of personality. Like most artists today, she prefers to work from brief sketches and detailed photographs taken during the first meeting.
