A Note About Portrait Society Prizes and Their Focus

We look for the best presentation of knowledge of human essence and form, as well as vitality of subject matter and love of creation.  We want to feel life in the portraits that are depicted—the "miracle" that emerges when this happens.  "Commercial value" and that something might sell is less important to us than high technical standards and the artist's obvious dedication.  In contemporary art, sometimes there isn't sufficient emphasis on craftsmanship, concept and marketability receiving greater attention.  Our Portrait Society has a more traditional outlook, something we try to communicate through providing educational opportunities, like our festival and workshops.
